Sandstone landscape on the Utah-Arizona border within the Navajo Nation, dominated by isolated buttes rising up to 305 metres from the valley floor. The buttes are the eroded remnants of the De Chelly Sandstone (Permian, ~270 million years old) capped with harder Shinarump Conglomerate. The most-photographed group, the Mittens (East and West), share a pillar shape resembling a hand mitten with thumb separated from fingers. ” The site became iconic in American visual culture through John Ford's nine westerns filmed there from 1939 onward; it has appeared in over 100 feature films and is the visual shorthand for “the West” in global advertising. Tribal Park status established 1958; tour access is operated by Navajo guides.
A 270-million-year-old sandstone shaped by a hundred million years of wind became the visual definition of America in the 20th century — and the Navajo own it.
