Piedras Negras — ancient name Yo'k'ib', meaning 'Great Gateway' — commanded the Usumacinta River from a series of terraced hills on its Guatemalan bank. The site produced some of the finest Maya sculpture ever carved, and it was here in 1960 that Tatiana Proskouriakoff demonstrated that Maya inscriptions recorded actual historical events — revolutionizing the entire field of Maya epigraphy. Sweat bath structures, throne monuments, and elaborately carved stelae document a royal dynasty spanning 500 years. At 49.98° bearing to Giza across 11,923 km, the 'Great Gateway' name resonates with the site's position on the Mesoamerican energy corridor.
