Cerro Sechin is famous for over 400 carved stone slabs lining its facade — depicting warriors in procession alongside graphic scenes of dismembered human bodies: severed heads, bisected torsos, trailing intestines, and stacked skulls. Dating to approximately 1600 BCE, these are among the oldest monumental stone carvings in the Americas. The three-stepped platform was discovered by Julio C. Tello in 1937. Whether the carvings depict actual warfare, ritual sacrifice, or surgical procedures remains debated. At 61.39° Giza bearing, Cerro Sechin's brutal iconography stands in stark contrast to contemporary Caral's apparently peaceful civilization, just 200 km to the south.
