Pyramid of Queen Amanitore

The pyramid of queen Amanitore at Meroë, built for the Kandake who ruled jointly with king Natakamani from approximately 1 to 50 CE — the longest joint Kushite reign known. Original base approximately 9 metres per side; original height around 17 metres at the steep Meroitic slope. Amanitore is depicted as Natakamani's full equal in the building inscriptions of their joint reign: at the Lion Temple at Naga her relief on the south pylon mirrors his on the north at exactly the same scale, both shown smiting bound enemies before the lion-headed god Apedemak. She is one candidate for the Kandake of the Ethiopians whose treasurer is recorded in the Acts of the Apostles (8:27) as having travelled to Jerusalem and been baptised by Philip on the road to Gaza — though the chronology and the identification of the Greek term Aithiopia with Meroë rather than later Aksum remain disputed. A pyramid for a queen whose iconography placed her as her king's full equal, possibly named in the New Testament under the title her dynasty used for ruling women.
