Phanom Rung is built on the rim of an extinct volcano at 402 meters elevation — one of only two sanctuary complexes worldwide positioned on volcanic craters. A long processional causeway with Naga serpent bridges ascends the volcanic slope to the main sanctuary, dedicated to Shiva as a representation of Mount Kailash. The famous Narai lintel depicting Vishnu Reclining was stolen and taken to the Art Institute of Chicago, then returned to Thailand in 1988 after a diplomatic campaign. During the spring and autumn equinoxes, the sun rises perfectly through all 15 doorways. At 296.81° Giza bearing, this volcano-summit temple commands one of the most powerful positions in the Khmer grid.
