Temple IV at Tikal, also known as the Temple of the Two-Headed Serpent, is the tallest pre-Columbian structure in the Americas — its roof comb reaching approximately 70 meters above the jungle floor, higher than a modern 20-story building. Built around 741 CE by Yik'in Chan K'awiil, son of Jasaw Chan K'awiil I, the temple celebrated his military victories over Calakmul and its allies, definitively establishing Tikal as the dominant Maya superpower. The carved wooden lintels at the temple summit (now in the Basel Museum) depict the king on a palanquin beneath a two-headed serpent — a cosmic vision of royal authority. At Giza bearing 50.73° and 11,784 km from the Pyramid Plateau, Temple IV's summit provides a 360° panoramic view of the Petén rainforest canopy, with the roof combs of Temples I, II, III, and V visible above the tree line — making Tikal's skyline a city of artificial mountains piercing the forest, each marking a royal ancestor.
