Temple V is the southernmost of Tikal's great pyramids, set apart from the Great Plaza on its own south acropolis in the Petén Basin of Guatemala. Constructed in the late seventh century CE, possibly under the reign of Animal Skull or his immediate successors, it rises 57 metres in seven terraces faced with dressed limestone. The pyramid's narrow summit shrine is unusual — only a single small interior chamber, with rounded corners that do not appear elsewhere at Tikal. The structure was consolidated and partially restored by the Proyecto Nacional Tikal between 1991 and 2004, work that confirmed extensive Late Classic remodeling over an earlier sixth-century core. The royal tomb expected within has never been found despite repeated tunneling by successive Tikal Project investigators. The summit shrine's roofcomb has collapsed, but the lower platform's rounded corners remain visible from the central acropolis.
Temple V is a pyramid the size of a fifteen-story building that may have been built for someone whose name has not survived.
