El Castillo is the largest structure at Tulum, perched on a 12-metre limestone cliff above the Caribbean Sea on the eastern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula in Quintana Roo, Mexico. Built during the Late Postclassic between approximately 1200 and 1450 CE, the pyramid rises in two tiers of cut limestone faced with stucco, with a colonnaded shrine at its summit. Two small windows in the seaward face have been documented to align with the safe channel through the offshore reef when a torch is lit inside — functioning as a navigation beacon for canoes returning at night.
" El Castillo is a temple that doubled as a lighthouse and has been guiding ships through a reef gap since before Columbus.
