The Buried Pyramid at Saqqara, attributed to Sekhemkhet (c. 2649-2643 BCE), was discovered by Zakaria Goneim in 1951 — one of the most dramatic archaeological finds of the 20th century. Only the lowest course of a planned seven-step pyramid was completed before the pharaoh's brief reign ended. The sealed alabaster sarcophagus found in the burial chamber generated enormous excitement, but when opened in 1954, it was completely empty — one of Egyptian archaeology's most tantalizing mysteries. A gold bracelet and other jewelry found nearby confirmed royal status. At Giza bearing 328.92° and 14.7 km from the Great Pyramid, the unfinished structure preserves a rare snapshot of pyramid construction in its earliest stages, revealing how builders laid foundations and planned subterranean passages before raising the superstructure above. Goneim's tragic suicide in 1959, following accusations of antiquities theft, adds a dark coda to the pyramid's story.
