Pyramid of Ibi

Late Sixth-Dynasty pyramid at South Saqqara built for Qakare Ibi, an Eighth-Dynasty pharaoh whose three-year reign falls in the immediate aftermath of the Old Kingdom collapse, approximately 2169–2167 BCE. Original base 31.5 metres per side; original height around 21 metres at a 53° slope — the smallest royal pyramid of any pharaoh. Excavated by Gustave Jéquier in 1929. The substructure preserved a vaulted limestone burial chamber inscribed with a complete set of Pyramid Texts continuing the Unas–Pepi II tradition, a basalt sarcophagus broken open in antiquity, and the canopic chest empty. Ibi's reign is attested only on this monument, in two impressions of his serekh found at the site, and on a single contemporary ostracon. The mortuary temple was unfinished at his death and partially built from blocks scavenged from earlier monuments.

The last royal pyramid in Egypt to carry Pyramid Texts on its walls, built at one-eighth the volume of the king's nominal predecessor, by a state that no longer existed in any meaningful sense.
