The Pyramid of Khui at Dara in Middle Egypt is the southernmost pyramid in the Memphite tradition and the largest mudbrick pyramid known in Egypt. Rising from the desert edge near the modern village of Dara, approximately 298 km from Giza at bearing 4.87°, the structure's identification as either a step pyramid or a giant mastaba remains debated. Its massive mudbrick construction — atypical for royal monuments — and provincial location suggest it belonged to a powerful regional ruler, possibly of the First Intermediate Period (c. 2180-2050 BCE) when central authority had collapsed and provincial governors acted as independent kings. The pyramid's remote position in Middle Egypt, far from the traditional royal cemeteries of the Memphite region, marks the geographic extent to which pyramid-building traditions dispersed during the political fragmentation following the Old Kingdom's fall.
