Tomb S9

Thirteenth-Dynasty subsidiary tomb at South Saqqara, designated S9 in the Jéquier survey, located within the enclosure of the unknown Southern South Saqqara pyramid. Construction date approximately 1730 BCE. Original base approximately 26 metres per side; original height around 18 metres — a small pyramid in its own right rather than a queen's tomb in the strict Old Kingdom sense. Excavated by Gustave Jéquier in 1930. The substructure preserved a quartzite burial chamber with a sliding roof, an empty sarcophagus, and fragmentary canopic jars whose inscriptions had been deliberately erased in antiquity. Whether S9 was built for a queen, a royal child, or a co-regent of the unknown king buried in the adjacent pyramid is unrecoverable from the surviving evidence.

A satellite tomb whose owner had their name removed before the burial, in an enclosure whose principal occupant is also unknown, in a dynasty that produced more anonymous pyramids than any other in Egyptian history.
