The Edfu South Pyramid, located 5 km south of Tell Edfu in Upper Egypt, is one of seven small provincial step pyramids dating to the late 3rd Dynasty (c. 2600 BCE). Excavated by a Yale University expedition beginning in 2010, this pyramid has provided some of the most detailed modern archaeological data on the provincial pyramid series. Originally standing about 5 meters on three steps, it was built of local sandstone rather than the limestone used at most pyramid sites. At Giza bearing 343.42° and 588 km from the Great Pyramid, the Edfu pyramid sits in a region associated with Horus — the Temple of Edfu nearby is the best-preserved temple in Egypt. The Yale team's careful excavation revealed construction techniques, tool marks, and evidence of the quarrying process, contributing to our understanding of how even small-scale pyramid construction was organized in provincial settings far from the royal workshops of Memphis.
