The Tower of Calatafo in central Sicily, Italy — a small dressed-stone pyramidal or stepped-tower structure with proposed datings ranging from the Bronze Age through the medieval Norman-Sicilian period (approximately fifteenth century CE). Original base approximately 5 metres per side; original height around 4 metres in a stepped square structure of locally quarried limestone. The Calatafo structure is one of the disputed Sicilian pyramidal monuments documented in modern Italian archaeological literature alongside Pietraperzia, Borgo Cascino, and approximately a dozen others. The date proposals span more than 3,000 years; secure stratigraphic dating has not been published. The Calatafo name itself derives from the Arabic qalat — fortress — suggesting the structure may have been a small medieval Saracen-period defensive tower rather than a pre-Roman monument. Mainstream Italian archaeological opinion does not accept the structure as a deliberate pre-Christian pyramid.
A small stepped tower in central Sicily whose date is disputed across a 3,000-year range and whose Arabic name suggests its actual function may have been entirely medieval.
