The ziggurat complex at Ebla (Tell Mardikh) stood within one of Syria's earliest kingdoms — a Bronze Age commercial empire whose 56-hectare site yielded over 20,000 cuneiform tablets in the Eblaite language, a previously unknown Semitic tongue. Temple D, dedicated to Ishtar, measured 30 by 11.5 meters on the acropolis, which covers approximately 3 hectares. At 220.83° Giza bearing across just 835 km, Ebla is one of the closest sites to the Egyptian heartland in this dataset. The Ebla tablets mention cities previously known only from the Bible, igniting decades of scholarly debate about ancient Near Eastern interconnections. The site suffered damage during the Syrian Civil War.
