Chan Chan in the Moche Valley near modern Trujillo, La Libertad, Peru — the capital city of the Chimú Empire, built between approximately 850 and 1470 CE. The largest pre-Columbian city in the Americas by total area: 20 square kilometres, with an estimated peak population of 60,000. The city consists of nine large rectangular ciudadelas (royal compounds) and a fourth area of supporting craft and residential buildings, all built of adobe brick and decorated with elaborate adobe relief friezes depicting marine animals, geometric step-frets, and rows of pelicans, otters, and fish. The Chimú Empire controlled 1,000 kilometres of the Peruvian coast at its peak before being conquered by the Inca in approximately 1470. Excavated continuously since 1960 by Peruvian and American missions. UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986; on the at-risk list since 2018 due to El Niño rainfall events that are dissolving the unprotected adobe at an accelerating rate.
