Chan Chan was the largest pre-Columbian city in South America — capital of the Chimu Empire, covering 20 square kilometers with an estimated population of 60,000. Ten walled citadels (ciudadelas), each containing pyramidal platform mounds, plazas, storerooms, and walk-in wells, were built sequentially by successive Chimu kings between 900-1470 CE. Elaborate adobe friezes depict marine motifs — fish, waves, seabirds — reflecting the Chimu's maritime orientation. Conquered by the Inca around 1470, who diverted the city's water supply. UNESCO World Heritage site on the endangered list. At 60.90° Giza bearing, Chan Chan's serial citadels encode dynastic succession into geometric urban form.
