Kuntur Wasi ('House of the Condor') crowns a hilltop in Peru's Cajamarca highlands at 2,300 meters elevation. The Chavin-era temple complex (c. 1100-50 BCE) yielded the oldest gold funerary artifacts ever found in Peru — elaborate crowns, earspools, and pectorals from elite tombs dating to 800 BCE. The stepped pyramid features a sunken plaza oriented to the cardinal directions, with stone carvings depicting feline and raptor imagery characteristic of the Chavin artistic tradition. At 60.58° Giza bearing, the site sits on the Andean Pleiades corridor. Japanese archaeologist Yoshio Onuki led excavations for over 30 years, establishing Kuntur Wasi as proof that highland Peru developed metallurgy independently of coastal influences.
