Kuelap, the great walled citadel of the Chachapoyas civilization, perches on a limestone ridge at 3,000 meters elevation with walls rising 10 to 20 meters above the surrounding cloud forest. Built between the 6th and 16th centuries CE, the fortress contains 421 circular stone structures and the mysterious inverted-cone temple called El Tintero. At 60.41° Giza bearing on the highland Pleiades corridor, Kuelap's massive walls contain three times more stone than the Great Pyramid of Giza. The site was built by the Chachapoyas — the 'Cloud People' whom the Inca considered their fiercest adversaries. A cable car installed in 2017 finally made the site accessible, but landslides closed it in 2022, returning Kuelap to its ancient isolation.
