Queen Shanakdakhete (c. 170-150 BCE) holds a singular distinction in ancient African history — she is the first known ruling queen (Kandake) of the Meroitic kingdom whose name is preserved. She ruled independently, without a co-regent king, establishing the precedent for the powerful Kandake tradition that would later produce warrior-queens like Amanirenas and Amanishakheto. Her pyramid at Meroe, positioned at 350.08° Giza bearing along the Meroitic meridian, contains relief decorations showing her in full royal regalia performing ritual acts. Her reign marks the moment when Meroe's political system diverged most dramatically from Egyptian precedent — empowering women to hold supreme authority.
