Aguateca sits atop a 90-meter limestone bluff split by a natural chasm, overlooking Petexbatun Lagoon in Guatemala's jungle lowlands. As twin capital with Dos Pilas, it served the aggressive Petexbatun dynasty during the Late Classic period. Around 810 CE, the city was overrun so rapidly that inhabitants fled leaving tools, ceramics, and goods in place — creating a Maya 'Pompeii' of extraordinary archaeological value. The natural defensive sinkhole bisecting the site was bridged and fortified. At 50.65° Giza bearing across 11,890 km, Aguateca anchors the Petexbatun node of the Mesoamerican energy network.
