Banteay Chhmar, built by Jayavarman VII in the late 12th century, is the fourth-largest Khmer temple complex and the only Bayon-style temple outside Angkor. Its walls bear some of the most dynamic battle reliefs in Khmer art, depicting the war against the Cham invaders. Multi-armed Avalokitesvara reliefs — unique to this site — demonstrate the king's Mahayana Buddhist devotion. An extensive hydraulic system of barays and canals surrounds the complex. At 296.99° bearing to Giza across 7,513 km, Banteay Chhmar anchors the northwestern frontier of the Khmer Empire's sacred-military architecture.
