Beng Mealea, built in the early 12th century in the same architectural style as Angkor Wat, lies 40 km east of the main Angkor complex — largely unrestored, its towers and galleries consumed by strangler figs and jungle. The outer gallery measures 181 by 152 meters, enclosing a central sanctuary now collapsed into a labyrinth of tumbled sandstone blocks. Its ruined state paradoxically makes it one of the most evocative temple experiences in Cambodia. At 297.27° bearing to Giza across 7,653 km, Beng Mealea may have been the prototype for Angkor Wat itself — a dress rehearsal for the world's largest religious monument.
