Cacaxtla's Great Basement houses some of the most vivid and well-preserved murals in all of Mesoamerica — a 22-meter battle scene depicting jaguar warriors defeating eagle warriors in graphic detail, rendered in Maya artistic style far from Maya territory. This Olmeca-Xicalanca fortress-palace (650-900 CE) sits atop a natural hill in Tlaxcala. The murals' Maya influence 1,000 km from the Maya heartland challenges conventional models of cultural isolation. A massive modern roof protects the pigments. The site's 45.67° Giza bearing places it precisely in the Central Mexican alignment corridor alongside Cholula, just 10 km distant.
