Candi Kalasan, erected in 778 CE per the oldest dated inscription in Central Java, is the earliest Buddhist temple on the Prambanan Plain — predating the colossal Prambanan Hindu complex by over a century. Dedicated to the goddess Tara, it originally housed a 4-meter bronze statue now lost. The temple's exterior once gleamed with vajralepa, a diamond-paste plaster whose recipe is recorded in the Kalasan inscription but has never been replicated. At 301.26° bearing to Giza across 9,425 km, Kalasan marks the Buddhist genesis point of Java's most sacred plain.
