Candi Sukuh is a truncated pyramid on the slopes of Mount Lawu in Central Java that astonishes visitors with its resemblance to Maya and Mesoamerican architecture — unique in all of Java. Built in the 15th century during the twilight of the Majapahit Empire, it represents a revival of the ancient Austronesian stepped-pyramid (punden berundak) form. Explicit fertility cult imagery dominates: a 1.82-meter lingam with four testes (relocated to the National Museum in Jakarta), graphic sexual reliefs, and birth-cycle narratives. At 301.13° Giza bearing, Sukuh's geometric parallels to Mesoamerican temples across the Pacific fuel ongoing debate about trans-oceanic cultural contact.
