Kushite temple complex on the east bank of the Nile near the fifth cataract in northern Sudan, built of sandstone and mud-brick within a fortified mud-brick enclosure wall. Dangeil contains a substantial temple of Amun founded in the late first century BCE during the Meroitic period and rebuilt several times across the following four centuries of continuous use. The site was identified in the 1990s and has been excavated since 2000 by a joint Sudanese–British Museum mission led by Julie Anderson and the late Salah Mohamed Ahmed of the Sudanese National Corporation for Antiquities and Museums. Notable finds include a series of monumental royal statues — among them three colossal granite figures of the early Kushite kings Taharqo, Senkamanisken, and Aspelta, all of which had been deliberately broken and ritually buried in antiquity beneath the temple floor. A small bakery within the temple complex preserved intact bread moulds and grindstones in working position.
The kings of Kush built temples to Egyptian gods and were broken into pieces by their own successors a generation later.
