Gedong Songo's nine Hindu temples, dedicated to Shiva and Parvati, spiral around a 1,270-meter volcanic hill near Mount Ungaran in Central Java — their placement among hot sulfur springs and jungle-shrouded ridges creating one of the most atmospheric sacred landscapes in Southeast Asia. Contemporary with the Dieng Plateau temples (8th-9th century CE), they represent the earliest layer of Hindu architecture in Java. Natural hot springs between the temple groups were likely used for ritual purification. At 301.24° bearing to Giza across 9,381 km, part of the Javanese highland sacred circuit.
