Capital of Malaysia, founded in the 1850s as a tin-mining settlement at the confluence of the Klang and Gombak Rivers. The city's name means “muddy confluence” in Malay. The Petronas Twin Towers (1998, Cesar Pelli) stand 451.9 metres tall, were the tallest buildings in the world from 1998 to 2004, and remain the tallest twin buildings on Earth. The towers' floor plan is based on Islamic geometric pattern: two interlocking squares forming an eight-pointed star. The skybridge between them at the 41st and 42nd floors is freely floating to allow independent thermal expansion of the towers. The Batu Caves, 13 km north of the city, contain a 100-year-old Hindu shrine inside a 400-million-year-old limestone cave system; the central Murugan statue (2006) is 42.7 metres tall, the second-largest Hindu deity statue outside India.
A muddy confluence became a tin-mining village became the capital of a country whose tallest buildings are mathematically Islamic and whose tallest statue is Hindu.
