Muaro Jambi is the largest Buddhist temple complex in all of Southeast Asia, covering 12 square kilometers along the Batang Hari River in Sumatra. Eight excavated temple sanctuaries emerge from over 80 unrestored mound ruins still hidden in the forest. Linked to the Srivijaya and later Melayu kingdoms, the complex may have been the Srivijaya capital itself. Chinese pilgrim I-Tsing studied here in the 7th century. At 301.49° bearing to Giza across 8,417 km, Muaro Jambi represents the largest concentration of Buddhist sacred architecture in the Malay world — a counterweight to Borobudur across the Java Sea.
