Muaro Jambi is a Buddhist temple and monastic complex on the Batanghari River in Jambi province of central Sumatra, Indonesia, built between approximately 700 and 1300 CE under the Srivijaya and later Melayu kingdoms. The complex covers 12 square kilometres along the river — among the largest temple sites in Southeast Asia — and contains at least 84 mound structures known locally as menapo, of which only a small fraction have been excavated and consolidated. Construction is in red brick laid in fine joints with mortar, with andesite imported for door surrounds and selected ornament. The principal restored temples include Candi Gumpung, Candi Tinggi, Candi Kembar Batu, and Candi Astano. Chinese Buddhist pilgrim Yijing studied Sanskrit at a great monastic university in this region in the 670s CE before continuing to India. Indonesian conservation work has restored several principal temples and excavated a network of canals and reservoirs that once managed standing water across the site.
