Gunung Padang is Southeast Asia's largest megalithic complex — five terraces of columnar basalt on a volcanic hillside in West Java, bordered by stone retaining walls. Upper terraces show clear human modification dating to approximately 2800 BCE. The columnar basalt formed naturally through volcanic activity but was deliberately arranged. Claims of a deeper Ice Age "pyramid" were retracted after peer review in 2024 found inadequate methodology. At 301.83° Giza bearing, the site's genuine antiquity places it among the oldest monumental constructions in island Southeast Asia.
