Labyrinth petroglyphs carved on volcanic basalt bluffs overlooking the Gila River at Gillespie Dam in southern Arizona. The Gila River corridor served as a major trade and migration route for Ancestral Sonoran peoples, connecting the Pacific coast to interior desert communities. The labyrinth carvings — part of a larger petroglyph complex — are attributed to the Hohokam culture (300-1450 CE), the same civilization that built Casa Grande. At 328.76° Giza bearing, the Gillespie Dam petroglyphs sit on the same Sonoran Desert alignment corridor as other Arizona labyrinth sites. The basalt substrate — cooled lava from Tertiary volcanic eruptions — develops a dark desert varnish that petroglyph makers exploited by pecking through to reveal lighter rock beneath.
