Wing Turf Maze (The Old Maze) is a turf-cut labyrinth in Rutland, England. The design is a medieval chartres layout with 11 circuits, 12 walls, approximately 15.2 metres in diameter, built of turf. Documented age: Medieval (13th-15th century). Current condition: intact. This 50-foot diameter, 11-circuit medieval labyrinth at Wing in Rutland shares its exact design with Chartres Cathedral's famous floor labyrinth — one of only two known English examples of the Chartres pattern. Documentation sources: Saward 2003, Matthews 1922. The labyrinth pattern occurs nowhere in nature; every documented instance traces back to a human hand. The labyrinth is one of several hundred sites of this type catalogued globally; each preserves the same unicursal walking-pattern with regional variation in scale, material, and date.
The labyrinth tradition spans at least 4,000 years of documented practice across northern Europe, the Mediterranean, the British Isles, North America, and the Indian subcontinent.
