The Temple of the Sun at Palenque, immediately south of the Temple of the Cross within the Cross Group, commissioned by K'inich Kan B'alam II between 690 and 692 CE. Original base 18 by 16 metres; original height 18 metres on five terraces with a temple at the summit. The summit temple preserves a hieroglyphic panel showing Kan B'alam offering a bound captive before an image of GIII — one of the three Palenque patron gods — represented as a war shield carrying the face of the jaguar sun of the underworld, supported by two crouching gods atop crossed spears. The iconography links the sun's nightly journey through the underworld to the king's military and ritual obligations to capture and sacrifice enemy lords.
The smallest of the three Cross Group pyramids, dedicated to the underworld phase of the sun, in the same dynastic commemoration sequence as its two larger siblings the Cross and the Foliated Cross.
