Named after the mythological bird of rebirth, the city was built directly atop the ruins of the Hohokam civilization, which constructed 135 miles of irrigation canals that modern Phoenix still uses. The Hohokam (meaning "those who have gone" in O'odham) vanished around 1450 CE. Phoenix bears to Giza at almost exactly 33° — and the city sits on the 33rd parallel, the same latitude as Baghdad, Damascus, and the Bermuda Triangle's northern vertex. The name Phoenix references Phoenicia (modern Lebanon), the ancient civilization whose purple dye industry and alphabet shaped Western civilization. The rebirth symbolism — city rising from the ashes of its predecessor — mirrors the alchemical process of death and renewal.
