Constructed between 1700-1100 BCE, Poverty Point in northeastern Louisiana is a monumental earthwork complex of six concentric C-shaped ridges spanning 3/4 of a mile across — predating the Great Pyramid of Giza by at least two centuries. The ridges, separated by 40-meter aisles, form a partial amphitheater open to the east, with Mound A (the Bird Mound) rising 22 meters — one of the largest earthen structures in North America. Over 4,000 people may have gathered here for seasonal ceremonies. The site's axis aligns to the winter solstice sunset. At Giza bearing 47.37°, Poverty Point was a trade nexus: artifacts of copper from the Great Lakes, galena from Missouri, soapstone from Appalachia, and red jasper from 1,500 miles away attest to a continental-scale network. The site's builders moved over 750,000 cubic meters of earth by hand — an engineering feat requiring sophisticated labor organization millennia before conventional histories acknowledge it.
