The Great Plaza with Stelae at Quiriguá in the Motagua River valley of southeastern Guatemala holds the tallest standing carved monoliths in the Maya world. Built up between approximately 720 and 810 CE under the rulers K'ahk' Tiliw Chan Yopaat and his successors, the plaza centres on Stela E — a single sandstone monolith 10.6 metres tall (8 metres above the surface, 3 metres buried) and weighing approximately 65 tonnes, the largest single quarried stone ever raised by the Maya. The stela was dedicated in 771 CE and bears a portrait of K'ahk' Tiliw Chan Yopaat, whose 738 CE defeat and beheading of Copán's ruler 18 Rabbit shifted the political balance of the southeastern Maya region. The site was first systematically excavated by Edgar Lee Hewett and Sylvanus Morley for the Carnegie Institution from 1910.

The Great Plaza is the place where the Maya raised the largest single carved stone they ever raised.
