Si Satchanalai Historical Park preserves the remains of the second city of the Sukhothai kingdom, founded in the 13th century CE on the west bank of the Yom River 60 kilometres north of Sukhothai. The walled city served as a royal residence for crown princes designated to rule before ascending to the throne at Sukhothai. The site contains 134 monuments within an enclosure of approximately 70 hectares, surrounded by an outer moat. Construction is primarily in laterite blocks with brick and stucco facing. The principal monuments include Wat Chang Lom, a Sri Lankan-influenced stupa surrounded by stucco elephant figures at the base; Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat with a tall corncob-shaped prang; and the Wat Chedi Chet Thaeo group of seven aligned stupas in varied styles. The adjacent Chaliang district contains older temples predating the Sukhothai foundation. UNESCO inscribed Si Satchanalai together with Sukhothai and Kamphaeng Phet in 1991.

The elephant figures at Wat Chang Lom still stand at the base of the stupa.
