Soba, capital of the Kingdom of Alodia — the southernmost of the three medieval Nubian Christian kingdoms — sprawled across 275 hectares on the Blue Nile just 19 km from modern Khartoum. Its churches were described by 10th-century Arab travelers as the finest in Nubia, with gardens and gilded interiors. A Meroitic temple converted to a Christian church reveals 1,500 years of continuous sacred use at this site. Alodia persisted as a Christian kingdom until approximately 1504, among the last African Christian states before the modern era.
