The Temple of the Feathered Serpent (Pyramid of Quetzalcoatl) at Teotihuacan is the third-largest structure in the city, its facade adorned with massive sculpted heads of the Feathered Serpent and the rain deity Tlaloc (or a fire serpent) alternating in rows — the most elaborate architectural sculpture in Mesoamerica. When the temple was dedicated around 200 CE, over 200 individuals were sacrificed and buried in its foundations — warriors and captives found with their hands bound behind their backs, arranged in groups of 4, 8, 9, 18, and 20, numbers encoding the Mesoamerican calendar. At Giza bearing 45.25° and 12,325 km from the Pyramid Plateau, the temple sits within the Ciudadela compound, a massive enclosed plaza that could hold the city's entire population. The deliberate burial of the facade behind a later platform (the Adosada) suggests a violent political upheaval around 350 CE that suppressed the Feathered Serpent cult — a revolution preserved in architecture.
