The Pyramid of the Moon at Teotihuacan rises 43 meters at the northern terminus of the Street of the Dead, its silhouette deliberately mirroring the profile of Cerro Gordo mountain behind it — making the pyramid an architectural echo of the sacred landscape. Built in seven superimposed construction phases between 100-450 CE, each phase sealed increasingly elaborate sacrificial offerings: the 1998-2004 excavations revealed bound human sacrifices, wolves, jaguars, pumas, eagles, rattlesnakes, and greenstone figurines — a cosmological program of offerings connecting earth, water, sky, and underworld. At Giza bearing 45.25° and 12,323 km from the Pyramid Plateau, the Pyramid of the Moon anchors the city's ceremonial axis with the Plaza of the Moon — a vast public space capable of holding over 100,000 participants in rituals. The pyramid's multi-phase construction documents the city's evolving theology over 350 years, with each new layer burying (and sanctifying) what came before.
