The Pyramid of Elephantine is the southernmost pyramid in Egypt proper, standing on Elephantine Island in the Nile at Aswan — ancient Egypt's southern frontier. This small three-step provincial pyramid (c. 2600 BCE), originally about 6 meters tall, sits at the First Cataract, where granite bedrock forces the Nile through narrow channels, creating rapids that marked the boundary between Egypt and Nubia. At Giza bearing 345.56° and 678 km from the Great Pyramid, it is the most distant of the seven provincial step pyramids from the Memphite royal necropolis. Elephantine was the cult center of Khnum, the ram-headed creator god who fashioned humanity on his potter's wheel, and home to the famous Nilometer that measured the annual flood. The island's granite geology — the same Aswan granite used to case the Great Pyramid's interior chambers — makes it a natural energy node where quartzite-rich bedrock meets the Nile's flow at its most turbulent point.
