The Pyramid of Pietraperzia in central Sicily, Italy — a small dressed-stone pyramidal structure of disputed date, with proposed datings ranging from Neolithic through Bronze Age and into the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Original base approximately 6 metres per side; original height around 4 metres in a stepped square structure of locally quarried limestone blocks. The Pietraperzia structure is one of approximately fifteen disputed Sicilian pyramidal structures documented in the modern Italian archaeological literature, the most famous of which is the Pyramid of Borgo Cascino. None of the Sicilian pyramids have been securely dated through stratigraphic excavation or radiocarbon analysis; the proposed date of Neolithic construction relies on typological comparison with the much better-dated Monte d'Accoddi in Sardinia 600 kilometres west. The interpretation of the structures as deliberate pyramidal monuments rather than later agricultural terracing or shepherds' shelters has been disputed in mainstream Italian archaeological publications.
A small dressed-stone pyramidal structure in central Sicily, in a regional cluster of approximately fifteen disputed monuments whose date and intentional pyramidal design have never been securely established.
