The six stepped pyramids of Guimar in Tenerife, Canary Islands, were dismissed as 19th-century agricultural terraces until Thor Heyerdahl's investigation in the early 1990s revealed precise astronomical alignments — the pyramids are oriented to mark both summer and winter solstice sunrises. Heyerdahl's interest was sparked by a 1990 newspaper article, and he established the Ethnographic Park of the Pyramids of Guimar to preserve and study the site. Archaeological evidence dates the visible structures to the 19th century, though the solstice alignments remain unexplained. At 75.73° Giza bearing across 4,587 km, the pyramids sit far out in the Atlantic — on a geometric corridor that, extended, connects to Mesoamerican sites.
