Ashur was the religious heart of the Assyrian Empire and home to three ziggurats within its 70-hectare walled precinct. The city's patron deity, also named Ashur, was the supreme god of the Assyrian pantheon. The site includes temples, palaces, and royal tombs spanning from 2500 BCE through the city's destruction in 614 BCE. At 245.16° Giza bearing, the site marks the northern terminus of the Mesopotamian corridor. UNESCO listed Ashur as endangered since 2003, threatened by the proposed Makhool Dam which would flood significant portions. Walter Andrae's 1903-1914 excavations for the Deutsche Orient-Gesellschaft established the site's archaeological framework.
