The only confirmed ziggurat with a helical spiral ramp, Khorsabad (Dur-Sharrukin) was Sargon II's purpose-built capital, completed in 706 BCE and abandoned immediately after his death in battle. Each of the four levels was painted a different color, corresponding to Assyrian cosmological symbolism. The city's walls measured 1,758 by 1,635 meters — a precise geometric plan enclosing a city that was occupied for barely a single generation. At 240.59° Giza bearing, it represents the northernmost major ziggurat in the Mesopotamian corridor. In 2023, excavators uncovered a 20-ton lamassu sculpture — the massive winged bull-figures that guarded Assyrian palace gates.
