Huaca del Sol is the largest pre-Columbian adobe structure in the Americas — originally a cross-shaped pyramid of approximately 130 million mud bricks rising over 40 meters. Spanish conquistadors in the 17th century diverted the Moche River to wash away the pyramid for gold, destroying roughly two-thirds of the structure and creating the dramatic sheared cliff face visible today. Built by the Moche civilization (100-800 CE) as their administrative center, it faced the ceremonial Huaca de la Luna across a 500-meter urban zone. At 60.91° Giza bearing, the Huaca's colossal scale — even in its ruined state — testifies to Moche engineering ambition rivaling any ancient civilization.
