The Huaca Larga at Túcume in the Lambayeque Valley, Lambayeque Region, Peru — the largest adobe pyramid by length in the Americas, part of a complex of 26 platform pyramids built between approximately 800 and 1532 CE by the Sicán, Chimú, and Inca cultures in succession. Original base 700 by 280 metres; original height 30 metres in successive terraced phases. The pyramid was substantially extended by each occupying culture: the Sicán founders, the Chimú who absorbed the region in the late fourteenth century, and the Inca who conquered it in the late fifteenth century immediately before the Spanish arrival. Excavated by the Tucume Archaeological Project under Thor Heyerdahl, Daniel Sandweiss, and Alfredo Narváez from 1988 onward. The site preserves Inca-period offerings of carved stone llama figurines and Spondylus shells in the upper layers, layered directly above earlier Sicán burials and Chimú feasting deposits.
The longest adobe pyramid ever built, in a complex that documents 700 years of successive Andean occupation in a single stratigraphic column.
