The largest religious monument ever built — 162.6 hectares, larger than Vatican City — was constructed in the early 12th century as a Hindu temple to Vishnu, later converted to Buddhism. Its central towers replicate Mount Meru, the cosmic axis of Hindu-Buddhist cosmology. The temple's west-facing orientation is unique among Angkorian temples and aligns it with the setting sun — a funerary association suggesting the entire complex functions as a death-transition architecture. At the spring equinox, the sun rises directly over the central tower. The surrounding moat — 190 meters wide — creates electromagnetic isolation, while its water surface doubles as a reflective amplifier. Bas-reliefs extending 800 meters depict the Churning of the Ocean of Milk — the creation narrative.
