Bakong is the first sandstone temple-mountain in Angkor and the prototype for all subsequent Khmer temple-pyramids, including the sublime Angkor Wat itself. Dedicated to Shiva by Indravarman I in 881 CE, its five-tier pyramid is flanked by eight brick towers on the lower levels. The central tower on the summit (a 12th-century addition) rises above the original 9th-century structure. Part of the Roluos group — the earliest Angkor-period monuments. At 297.30° Giza bearing across 7,634 km, Bakong inaugurated the architectural grammar that would produce the greatest temple-building tradition in human history.
