Pre Rup's name means "turn the body" — a reference to the funerary cremation rituals believed to have been performed here. Five brick towers arranged in a quincunx (four corners plus center) crown three steep laterite terraces. Twelve small shrines line the lowest tier. Built in 961 CE by Rajendravarman II, it served as the state temple before Jayavarman V built Ta Keo. The temple sits south of the East Baray, the enormous reservoir that sustained Angkor. At 297.27° Giza bearing, Pre Rup's cremation-site function suggests the Khmer understood death itself as a geometric transformation — the body turned to ash, the spirit turned toward the cosmos.
